In the mid-00s, the most animated debate on art criticism in years was taking place through numerous contributions in dailies, art magazines and, not least, on blogs. The critics were thought to have lost power; there was a crisis in the land of critics. It was claimed that art criticism was absent from the intellectual discourse of cultural pages. There were great hopes for the possibilities of digitalization, particularly on blogs. After post-criticism, a new generation was knocking on the door and wanted to enter the public space. What happened next?

Arne Ruth wrote in the last issue of 00TAL about the 1930s, when the cultural pages of Göteborgs Handels- och Sjöfarts-Tidning was considered protected space. Today, cultural material has to fight for room with entertainment pieces and advertisements in slimlined, tabloidized newspapers. Critics look for what is different and peculiar in the flow of e-flux material that pours into the computer day and night. In all this, there should be room for reflective, literary essay-style criticism, with historical and international outlooks. What are the distinctive characteristics of critics, in the conglomerate of different newspaper materials appearing in today’s flow of debates and prevailing current opinions?

Art Criticism from a French Perspective

Elisabeth Lebovici is one of the most significant voices on the French art scene today. As an art historian, curator, and critic, she has had a decisive influence on the contemporary discussion about art. The Swedish Art Critics Association (Svenska Konstkritikersamfundet) has invited Elisabeth Lebovici to give a lecture in Stockholm, which is entitled Art Criticism from a French Perspective

CV
Elisabeth Lebovici, art historian and critic, has for a long time been a cultural journalist at the daily newspaper Libération (1990-2005). Previously, she was the editor of Beaux-Arts Magazine and A. Les aventures de l’art.
She has written extensively for the art press, for catalogues, and artists’ books; among her last contributions: ”Manifeste post-feministe” (FRAC Lorraine, 2008), ”Temporalités Féministes” (Multitudes, 2008), Louise Bourgeois (Tate Modern and Centre Pompidou, 2007-8), Zoe Leonard (2007 and 1998), ”Passage du temps” (2007), ”Gender Battle” (2007) and ”Global Feminisms” (2007).
She recently published the results of 8 years of research: a book co-written with Catherine Gonnard, entitled Femmes artistes/Artistes femmes, Paris de 1880 à nos jours (Hazan, 2007).
Together with Patricia Falguières, Hans Ulrich Obrist, and Natasa Petresin Bachelez, she holds a weekly seminar at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales, Paris.
She is currently working on ”L’Argent”, an exhibition with Caroline Bourgeois at Le Plateau/FRAC Ile de France, opening on June 15th.
